Well before frustrated rock chicks were swooning over Daisy Jones’s cowboy boots and kaftans in the TV adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s hit book, Penny Lane was the exemplar of “band girlfriend” style in Cameron Crowe’s 2000 film, Almost Famous. It was Kate Hudson’s breakout role, earning her an Oscar nomination as well as a spot in pop culture history thanks to the film’s many unforgettable scenes – including one in which the avowed groupie kicks off a singalong to Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer” on Stillwater’s tour bus, Dolores.

More than 20 years on from that performance, the actor had a full circle moment at Glastonbury over the weekend, where she took in Elton’s headline set to close out the 2023 festival from the side of the stage. Rather than Billy Crudup’s Russell Hammond, Hudson was singing along to “Tiny Dancer” with Lizzo – who shut down the Pyramid Stage with her own set the previous night – this time around.
There was no sign of her character’s trademark shearling coat or lace crop top (which costume designer Betsy Heimann crafted from a tablecloth for Hudson to wear in the film), but one Penny Lane signature was all present and correct: her spiral curls. Kate was snapped at Chiltern Firehouse in London earlier this month with long and straight blonde hair, but she arrived on Worthy Farm with the sort of tumbling waves that turned Russell Hammond’s head on Stillwater’s 1973 tour.
