When Dyson unveiled its fourth hair tool in New York recently, it was met with plenty of oohs and aahs. Six years in the making, the Airstrait dries and straightens hair in one fell swoop using hot air rather than plates – minimising damage in the process. Here’s why the Airstrait is another Dyson feat of engineering.
How does the Airstrait work?
“The challenge is always miniaturising everything,” founder James Dyson told the crowd gathered for the Airstrait’s launch. Powered by a tiny motor – the same one used in other haircare tools from the Dyson range – its blades deliver airflow at a 45-degree angle, creating a focused jet whose downward force dries and straightens hair simultaneously.
How many styling modes and temperature settings are there on the Airstrait?
There are two styling modes: wet and dry. The wet mode has three heat settings of 80°C, 110°C and 140°C, while the dry mode has two temperatures of 120°C and 140°C. There’s also a top-up mode designed for resetting your style a day or two in, plus a root drying mode.
Does the Airstrait style dry hair?
Yes. While the Airstrait can style wet hair (an amazing party trick), it also works on dry hair if you’re looking to refresh your style a couple of days after washing.
What else does the Airstrait do?
If you lock the Airstrait’s arms together, the device can be used as a traditional hairdryer. It’s a great bonus, especially considering how lightweight the tool is overall.

Priced at $499, the Airstrait isn’t cheap, but consider it a lifelong investment in your hair health.
Sadly, the Airstrait is currently only available in North America, with the UK release to be confirmed.
