This Japanese Manicure Will Cure Your Weak Nails

When you think of Japanese manicures, you likely think of OTT nail art, heavily embellished intricate designs and cute Hello Kitty decals. But there is another kind of Japanese manicure that’s growing in popularity, and for all the right reasons. In addition to creating clean and glossy nails that look healthy, the technique actually helps to repair weak nails. Believed to be over 400 years old, the technique reflects a traditional ritual that aristocratic women in Japan took part in to keep their nails looking groomed, but also to help keep them healthy.

The manicure is created using a wax paste (traditionally beeswax) and powder, an experience you can recreate at home with a kit like the P Shine Japanese Manicure set, designed to nurse damaged nails back to health. Nail artist Kseniia Pryzemyrska explains: “If you’ve had gel nails removed or even just normal polish, the Japanese manicure kit can help nails look neat and clean.” It’s an especially good option if you want the clear glossy look of gel, but you’re keen to give your nails a break from UV polish.

“The combination of wax and powder make your nails shiny,” Pryzemyrska goes on. “They fill in any ridges or bumps on your nail plate, and then the powder and wax mix will naturally come off over two weeks.” Together, the products leave nails looking glossy, but also strengthen nails that might be weak or brittle, while the beeswax adds moisture. The technique may be old, but it’s our new “we’re on a break” manicure go-to.
